Dark Sacred Night by Michael Connelly
About The Book
Renée Ballard is working the night beat again, and returns to Hollywood Station in the early hours only to find a stranger rifling through old file cabinets. The intruder is retired detective Harry Bosch, working a cold case that has gotten under his skin. Ballard kicks him out, but then checks into the case herself and it brings a deep tug of empathy and anger.
Bosch is investigating the death of fifteen-year-old Daisy Clayton, a runaway on the streets of Hollywood who was brutally murdered and her body left in a dumpster like so much trash. Now, Ballard joins forces with Bosch to find out what happened to Daisy and finally bring her killer to justice.
I will have to admit that this is the first book I’ve ever read of the famous detective Bosch, but it will not be the last, this I can assure you. I was missing a really good detective, with his faults, of course, but interesting and perseverant; do not miss it!
This is a police procedural book, you’ll find clues, investigation, suspects and of course the killer; but not in a way you are used. Bosch is investigating an old case, he is trying to discover who killed a young girl because he promised it to her mother. Bosch will have the help of the detective Renée Ballard; they don’t seem to have the same way of working but their methods seem to understand each other.
This is a Bosch case, so don’t expect to read just one case! The story is told between the two characters, Bosch and Ballard, so they have their own investigations and on their free time they work together to solve the cold case. One follows the rules while the other is tired to follow them, maybe that’s why they are working so good together. One balances the other one, and that’s why this case is so fulfilling, you feel like you’ve just read a great case and can’t wait to read the next one. I really liked how the author, Michael Connolly, mixes the investigation between with their detective work and their own personal life, it never gets difficult to follow it or to know what character is talking.
This is a book of layers; different cases, different characters but a same destination; discover the truth.
Don’t be scared if you’ve never read any of the previous Bosch cases, you can follow perfectly the case, but be prepared to want to read more, it’s additive!
