Moby-Dick, A Pop-Up Book – From the novel of Herman Melville

The classic story book of Moby-Dick by Herman Melville has always been a reference for me during my childhood and I think is a great book to teach some values to the little ones while they are impressed with the almost real images of the book.
I suppose you’ve already read Moby-Dick, but here is a refresh of the plot:

Moby Dick is the story of Captain Ahab’s quest to avenge the whale that ‘reaped’ his leg. The quest is an obsession and the novel is a diabolical study of how a man becomes a fanatic. But it is also a hymn to democracy. Bent as the crew is on Ahab’s appalling crusade, it is equally the image of a co-operative community at work: all hands dependent on all hands, each individual responsible for the security of each.
Among the crew is Ishmael, the novel’s narrator, ordinary sailor, and extraordinary reader. Digressive, allusive, vulgar, transcendent, the story Ishmael tells is above all an education: in the practice of whaling, in the art of writing.

This is an extraordinary book, not only for the classic story that we all know but for the original combination of sizes of the font, to remark the important parts of the story; and the illustrations are so detailed! I’ve always been a pop-up book collector, I think it takes the story to another level, you can “touch” the characters and take a deeper look at the story. That’s why I loved what Chronicle Books has done to Moby Dick, it has refreshed a story we all know to make it easy to read for the young ones and with beautiful linocuts created by the artist Joëlle Jolivet to fully understand the story and being able to enter to it.

Classic books are not always easy to understand or to read, that’s why this book will be a perfect addition to your child’s library or to your bed time routine.

Pop-Up books are never cheap, it takes time to create them and mount the pages, but I think the experience is always worth the money and a book is for life not only for one use. You can find it on Amazon for £22.75; not cheap but worth every page of it.

I would like to thank Chronicle Books for allowing me to read and review this book; it has been a pleasure and my son loves it! 😉
