Shelter in Place by Nora Roberts
About The Book
When the shots rang out in the shopping mall, Simone Knox knew what to do. Shelter in place. That’s what they taught you to do in the event of a mass shooting. So on that terrible, hot summer day in 2005, Simone was lucky. She escaped death. But she would never be the same again.
More than ten years later, Simone still struggles with grief, trauma and the misplaced guilt of a survivor. She spends much of her time alone on Tranquility Island – a quiet, artistic community off the coast of Maine. But she is transforming – shaping herself the way she shapes her extraordinary and highly prized sculptures. As she heals herself, she opens up to Reed Quartermaine, who survived the shooting himself and has become a detective.
But someone has been watching all the survivors of the DownEast Mall massacre. They have spent years perfecting a plan to finish what was started that day. Now that Reed and Simone have found each other, they are in more danger than they can possibly imagine – from a killer who will not, and cannot stop.
Lately I am reading a lot about massacres, not only on the news but fiction books too. I am not sure if this is a way to shock more the reader or to make the society re-think what the guns really do in our life.
But this case is not only about a killing, is about the survivors and the families of the victims, because don’t ever think that this type of success is easy to live on or to forget, it stays forever with you; nightmares, pain, sadness… I really don’t want to think what kind of cold mind can prepare killing people just because, this is something I don’t understand.
This is a survival story, how the life of two people become linked “thanks” to their worst nightmare, survive while their friends are being killed. One decided to become an artist, Simone Knox, who lost one of her best friends, don’t really know how to cope with all the sadness and grieve of the attack till a lot of years later when she meet Reed Quatermaine, another survivor. They both have their own path, but their connection made them feel an interior peace, like accepting their past and trying to accept life for what it is, good and bad.
This is a love story, with a little investigation on it, but since the first moment we know who the killer is and the interior motives. It will be a race against the clock to know if they will catch the killer before it kills all the survivors…
This book has an enchanting and light way to get the reader glued to the story without noticing it. It’s not an easy read, but it makes the reader understand how difficult is to keep living after surviving an attack. Ready for Shelter in Place?
