About The Book

TWO FEMALE SPIES. A BANNED MASTERPIECE. A BOOK THAT CHANGED HISTORY.
1956. A celebrated Russian author is writing a book, Doctor Zhivago, which could spark dissent in the Soviet Union. The Soviets, afraid of its subversive power, ban it.
But in the rest of the world it’s fast becoming a sensation.
In Washington DC, the CIA is planning to use the book to tip the Cold War in its favour.
Their agents are not the usual spies, however. Two typists – the charming, experienced Sally and the talented novice Irina – are charged with the mission of a lifetime: to smuggle Doctor Zhivago back into Russia by any means necessary.
It will not be easy. There are people prepared to die for this book – and agents willing to kill for it. But they cannot fail – as this book has the power to change history.

My Thoughts

This is the story of a book, Doctor Zhivago, a forbidden book that we all know but we don’t really know the story behind it, because The Secrets We Kept is not a spy thriller book but how can reality become one.
This had been an amazing read, beautifully written and with some insight of how was living during the Cold War in Russia. I’ve seen a lot of movies of the Cold War but reading about it felt more real and almost being there, the fear and the doubts always on your skin. Not knowing who to trust and risking your freedom for a book, seems weird but it was the life of Sally, Irina and Olga, the main characters of the story. Without searching for it, they are the heroines of this story, trying to keep the famous book Doctor Zhivago safe from spies and agents, of course it would not be an easy task, some of them are ready to kill to have it!
I really loved this story, it felt like the reader was part of the book, trying to keep the book safe and discover who the “bad people” really were. It’s not easy to follow the story in the beginning, so many different points of view and characters, that it took me a little to enter in it. And let’s be honest, I am not a big fan of historical books, but sometimes the story is so powerful that it has to be read for anyone. It’s important to know that in the worst situations, some people are ready to risk their lives for what they think it’s important.
