A House of Ghosts by W.C. Ryan
About The Book
Winter 1917. As the First World War enters its most brutal phase, back home in England, everyone is seeking answers to the darkness that has seeped into their lives.
At Blackwater Abbey, on an island off the Devon coast, Lord Highmount has arranged a spiritualist gathering to contact his two sons who were lost in the conflict. But as his guests begin to arrive, it gradually becomes clear that each has something they would rather keep hidden. Then, when a storm descends on the island, the guests will find themselves trapped. Soon one of their number will die.
A remote island, ghosts, a mystery… everything during the First World War; ready for an atmospheric mystery?
I’ll have to admit that I enjoyed this story; is a slow burning mystery full of interesting characters and a rich and deep background for the story. Because what’s really important in this story is all the subplots on each character, mainly Kate Cartwright and Captain Robert Donovan the two “detectives” of the story. They will tell the story in their own way, their discoveries and ghosts, of course!
In the beginning it was a little difficult to follow the story with so many characters and stories involved on the plot; but as you start entering the book you’ll be engaged to discover more and of course ready to know who is trying to kill the owner of the island, Lord Highmount, who is only trying to contact his dead sons… Who could have such a strong motive to kill him?
This had been a really atmospheric read, it remembers me a little the Agatha Christie books; different characters with so many secrets and lies between them that all could have a motive to kill… It was interesting that the story is based during the war, because you can feel the tension and secrets hidden at everyone’s sight, because Kate and Donovan are not only trying to keep Lord Highmount alive but also trying to discover if there’s a traitor between them!
I really liked the chemistry between Kate and Donovan, I hope this will not be their only adventure, I’ll love to read more about them!
