About the Book

Veronica McCreedy lives in a mansion by the sea. She loves a nice cup of Darjeeling tea whilst watching a good wildlife documentary. And she’s never seen without her ruby-red lipstick, although these days Veronica is rarely seen by anyone because, at 85, her days are spent mostly at home, alone.
She can be found either collecting litter from the beach (‘people who litter the countryside should be shot’), trying to locate her glasses (‘someone must have moved them’) or shouting instructions to her assistant, Eileen (‘Eileen, door!’). Veronica doesn’t have family or friends nearby. Not that she knows about, anyway . . . And she has no idea where she’s going to leave her considerable wealth when she dies. But today . . . today Veronica is going to make a decision that will change all of this.
She is going on an intrepid journey – to save the penguins.

My Thoughts

There are some books that even when the plot is not what you are used to read you know that you’ll love it, because Away With The Penguins is the book that every reader will love, warm and full of penguins. It will tell the story of Veronica McCreedy who decides to take the trip of her dreams, visiting the Antarctica!
This is a warm hearted story, Victoria is a rich and lonely woman, disappointed with humanity and with nothing planned for the rest of her life, she decides to take an adventure and leave her inheritance to the penguins research, but as you can imagine, she needs to see for herself that they are worth their money. And I’ll add that this is something really brave and shows the strength of Veronica, maybe some people would think that she doesn’t trust them, but after reading so many horrible things about organizations, I wouldn’t trust anyone either with my money, and considering Veronica’s age, she is a really brave woman!
But the story is not only about penguins (that I love and would love to make a donation too!) but about Veronica’s life and past, because the person she is right now is the result of her past, and after reading it, no wonder she doesn’t trust people! We’ll see the relation between her and her grandson Patrick, that will change while the story progresses…
The story is told between the past and the present, Victoria’s diaries and her visit to the Antarctica while we’ll enjoy some interesting facts about these cute animals. But don’t expect a boring read, it’s full of life, interesting facts and a sweet and emotive heart. This is a book I enjoyed every minute and would recommend to any book lover, because who doesn’t love penguins? 😉
