But as Elma and her team make a series of discoveries, they bring to light a host of long-hidden crimes that shake the entire community. Sifting through the rubble of the townspeople’s shattered memories, they have to dodge increasingly serious threats, and find justice … before it ’s too
late.
My Thoughts
I watched this book in black and white on my head, full of snow, with some beautiful landscapes and with silence as the only sound, this is what I will remember of the story, the gripping atmosphere that surrounds it all. Because this is the typical book that you don’t know when you started reading it, but you can’t stop turning pages to know more.
Let’s admit it, it has all the ingredients to be a gripping thriller and who doesn’t love a good mystery with a lighthouse involved?
The story is told by the Chief Investigating Officer Elma, she has just returned to her natal city, Akranes, after a breakup. She expects less work and less difficulty on her cases in her new job, sadly her first case will be more difficult than she ever expected. Her colleagues Sævar and Hörður will give the story friendship and chemistry between the characters, because Elma will need all the possible help in her return, not only the case but in her personal life.
I loved how the story turns around the case but never forgets the relations between the characters and their emotions, because let’s be honest, a case no matter how twisted it is, if the characters on it doesn’t have chemistry everything falls apart.
The case is really interesting and slow paced, with a woman dead and some flashbacks from the past, we will see that there’s much more of the case that what we expected in the beginning. This is one of those cases with past secrets involved and someone ready to kill to keep them buried, seems a cliche, but sadly too real.
The Creak on the Stairs is an amazing read and I hope it will be the first of a series, I really can’t wait to know more about all the characters!
