All About Us by Tom Ellen
About The Book
Ben’s always loved the month of December, but this year, with his relationship with Daphne on the rocks, it’s missing its usual magic. And then his old friend Alice gets back in touch. Ben’s always thought of Alice as the one that got away, and he can’t help but wonder: what if he’d done things differently all those years ago?
He never imagines he might get to find out… but when a stranger sells Ben a mysterious watch one freezing winter’s night, he’s astonished to wake up the next morning on 5th December 2005: the day he first kissed Daphne, leaving Alice behind.
Now Ben must make the biggest decision of his life, all over again. But this time around, will he finally find the courage to follow his heart?
The books based on the famous novel from Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol, always intrigue me, because I never get bored of them, they always make me want to know how the main character will end changing their life, for good or for bad?
All About Us is a romantic story, beautiful and tender, told from the male character’s perspective, Ben, and how he is “not living” his life. Everything will start on the 2020 Christmas Eve, Ben is not comfortable with his life and is scared that the relation with his wife Daphne will be ending soon. When he. meets a strange man, he will give him a mysterious clock that will change his life forever. He will return to the past to see his life with a fresh perspective and give him the strength he needs to change his future.
I think there’s always a moment in our life that we try to take a perspective of what we are doing and what we would have liked to accomplish in our lives, to know if our young hood dreams and hopes had been reached or if we have failed miserably. Ben is in this situation, he doesn’t like his job, he is always fighting with his wife and seeing an old flame seems the only thing that interests him. Maybe with the ghost from the past he will see that his life is not the one he should be living and Daphne is not the real love of his life…
This had been a beautiful Christmas tale, perfect to enjoy with a warm hot chocolate in your comfy sofa, because even if it’s a sweet story, it will make the reader reconsider their choices and what would they like their future to be. We don’t search for perfection, we only search for love and acceptance, and this is what Ben will learn. Before trying to be a good partner, you have to accept yourself.
