Who is Vera Kelly? by Rosalie Knecht
About The Book
New York City, 1962. Vera Kelly is struggling to make rent and blend into the underground gay scene in Greenwich Village. She’s working night shifts at a radio station when her quick wits, sharp tongue, and technical skills get her noticed by a recruiter for the CIA.
Next thing she knows she’s in Argentina, tasked with wiretapping a congressman and infiltrating a group of student activists in Buenos Aires. As Vera becomes more and more enmeshed with the young radicals, the fragile local government begins to split at the seams. When a betrayal leaves her stranded in the wake of a coup, Vera learns war makes for strange and unexpected bedfellows, and she’s forced to take extreme measures to save herself.
I’ll say from the beginning that I love the cover of the book; original and eye-catching it makes you want to know who Vera Kelly is and why she has a book based on her life!I read this book in one sit, it was quick to read, profound and full of tension, it was impossible to take my eyes from the story.
I don’t want to make spoilers of the story, so I’ll try to be brief on my description, just enough to make you want to read the book, don’t worry.
This is the life of Vera Kelly, told between two storylines; from when she was young in 1957 in Maryland and later in 1966 in Argentina. Both stories make you discover the real Vera and her core, a woman that suffered for almost all of her life and who doesn’t really know what part in the world she fits, only wanting to be normal.
There were so many times during this story that I was angry with Vera’s family and how all the world disappointed her one time after another! The mother, the aunt, the psychologist, her job… she is a strong and brave woman, her life has not been easy but she is resourceful to keep fighting for her life and trying to be happy.
This is an amazing read, it inspires the reader to know more about the Argentinian story and to know more about this lovely character, it’s impossible that there will not be another book with more of her life and another amazing adventure! (Fingers crossed!)
