The Dare by Lesley Kara
About The Book
As a child, it was just a game. As an adult, it was a living nightmare.
‘This time it’s different. She’s gone too far now.
She really has.’
When teenage friends Lizzie and Alice decide to head off for a walk in the countryside, they are blissfully unaware that this will be their final day together – and that only Lizzie will come back alive.
Lizzie has no memory of what happened in the moments before Alice died, she only knows that it must have been a tragic accident. But as she tries to cope with her grief, she is shocked to find herself alienated from Alice’s friends and relatives. They are convinced she somehow had a part to play in her friend’s death.
Twelve years later, unpacking boxes in the new home she shares with her fiancé, Lizzie is horrified to find long-buried memories suddenly surfacing. Is the trauma of the accident finally catching up with her, or could someone be trying to threaten her new-found happiness?
Grieving is a slow process, everyone needs their own time and pace; this is the story of Lizzie, she lost her best friends 12 years ago, but she is still grieving, trying to accept her death, maybe there’s some guilt involved too? The problem is that she doesn’t remember fully what happened the day she passed away, she only remembers that everyone around her pointed at her like she was guilty, treating her… But now Lizzie seems to start having her dreams fulfilled until one day someone from the past connects with her, will she be now ready to discover what really happened that day?
When we are young we do some really crazy things without even thinking about the consequences, this is a reminder of how friends and games can be really dangerous, of course I am not saying that we are all killers or that someone has to day. But after reading so many books that have accidents during childhood I am starting to wonder if I was lucky and no one ever had a life threatening injury!
This is a slow paced story, and I am not lying when I am saying that once you start reading it, it will be impossible to put down, it’s like a spider-web, you’ll get trapped inside the story! The characters are not someone you’ll like on your side, but they all have their story to make us understand their thoughts and actions, of course, the flashbacks from the past will show us what really happened that day.
I liked how the main character is not perfect or pretends to be, she has epilepsy, an illness that is not always talked on stories but quite common and dangerous, for me, these little details on the story make the book more real and human, like something that can happen to anyone, not only in fiction.
This has been a great read, full of twists and surprises that will make you love the author Lesley Kara. If you’ve read her previous books you will love this one, and if this is your first read you’ll discover an amazing author!
