About The Book

A dark and sophisticated thriller set in the heart of Botswana, introducing Michael Stanley’s beloved Detective Kubu
Recruited straight from university to Botswana’s CID, David ‘Kubu’ Bengu has raised his colleagues’ suspicions with his meteoric rise within the department, and he has a lot to prove.
When the richest diamond mine in the world is robbed of 100,000 carats worth of gems, and the thieves are found, executed, Kubu leaps at the chance to prove himself. First he must find the diamonds – and it seems that a witch doctor and his son have a part to play.
Does this young detective have the skill and integrity to engineer an international trap? Or could it cost him everything?

My Thoughts

Some books leave you a mark, in my case, this is one of them. I’ll admit that I’ve never read any of the Detective Kubu cases, but this will change soon, as this is a prequel and I can start his series right now!
David Bengu, Kubu, will start at the police office in Africa with a surprising job, there’s something weird happening at the airport with the luggage; the labels are scanned but the luggage never arrives at the destination…
But this surprising case will be delayed with a more dangerous one, the robbery of 100,000 carats of diamonds.
The word “Diamonds” had a new significance for me after watching “Blood Diamond” a few years ago and discover all the sacrifices that are done for this “stupid” stones, because let’s be honest, only the richest ones can pay them while thousands of people lose their life for them. Are they really worth it? But this is not the case of the story, the case is robbery, who could want to steal them? And why? The case will turn a deep turn when black magic and a witch doctor seem to be involved in the case… Is Kubu ready for this job? You’ll have to read the book if you want to know more! This case has totally surprised me, with some very interesting characters, a surprising plot and some humor sparks it was impossible to put down. Because Kubu is a character impossible not to love, respectful and intelligent he makes the case “easy” and keeps the reader wanting for more. If you want to read a detective case like no other, Kubu will keep you entertained for a long time, believe me!
Are you ready for “Facets of Death”?

About The Author

Michael Stanley is the writing team of Michael Sears and Stanley Trollip. Both were born in South Africa and have worked in academia and business. Stanley was an educational psychologist, specialising in the application of computers to teaching and learning, and is a pilot. Michael specialised in image processing and remote sensing and taught at the University of the Witwatersrand.
On a flying trip to Botswana, they watched a pack of hyenas hunt, kill, and devour a wildebeest, eating both flesh and bones. That gave them the premise for their first mystery, A Carrion Death, which introduced Detective David ‘Kubu’ Bengu of the Botswana
Criminal Investigation Department. It was a finalist for five awards, including the Crime Writers’ Association Debut Dagger. The series has been critically acclaimed, and their third book, Death of the Mantis, won the Barry Award for Best Paperback Original mystery and was shortlisted for an Edgar award. Deadly Harvest was shortlisted for an International Thriller Writers award. They have also written a thriller, Dead of Night, following the investigative journalist, Crystal Nguyen, who gets caught up in the war against rhino poaching and rhino-horn smuggling.

  1. Thanks very much for the review of Facets of Death! As you say, this is a great place to start the series, and there are six other Kubu books already.
Actually, we decided that there are still a lot of developments ahead for Kubu before he reaches the first contemporary book, A Carrion Death, so the next one will also be a prequel between the two.
    thanks again
