About The Book

England, 1943. Lost in fog, Air Transport Auxiliary pilot Vee Katchatourian is forced to make an emergency landing where she meets enigmatic RAF airman Stefan Bergel, and then can’t get him out of her mind.
In occupied Poland, Ewa Hartman hosts German officers in her father’s guest house, while secretly gathering intelligence for the Polish resistance. Mourning her lover, Stefan, who was captured by the Soviets at the start of the war, Ewa is shocked to see him on the street one day.
Haunted by a terrible choice he made in captivity, Stefan asks Vee and Ewa to help him expose one of the darkest secrets of the war.
But it is not clear where everyone’s loyalties lie until they are tested.

My Thoughts

Can I tell you a secret? It seems that these days the things that keep me reading are the romantic dramas with a turbulent past on them! Don’t ask me why, I normally like mystery/thrillers with as many deaths as possible, but with Covid it seems that mainly I read romantic stories with a lot of problems on them, tears are easier to flow… As you can imagine I read the book in one breath, but it was worth every page! 😉
Don’t get me wrong with the book, I love this author and I think all her books are amazing, but a book based during the war, even if it has a happy ending with a lot of rainbows, it will always be bitter sweet for me, war is never something happy or beautiful; but something we all have to remember with fear.
The story is about three characters; two strong women and a man that becomes involved with them, Stefan. The characters felt so real and human that I could almost feel their emotions in my skin. Their story is powerful and will show us a different side of the story during the second World War (WW2). I’ve always been interested in history, but I am aware that each country explains in detail their own history, so it’s always interesting reading how each country suffered the same pain and how the survivors tried to be faithful to their acts, no matter how difficult they were. In this case Poland during the WW2, something that we don’t usually read or have information, but it’s as painful as our history.
If you have never read anything by Carolyn Kirby, you should start right now, the books are always special and original, makes the reader to travel inside the story and feel part of it, you’ll not be disappointed at all.
