About The Book

In 1930s London, celebrity psychiatrist Anselm Rees is discovered dead in his locked study, and there seems to be no way that a killer could have escaped unseen. There are no clues, no witnesses, and no evidence of the murder weapon. Stumped by the confounding scene, the Scotland Yard detective on the case calls on retired stage-magician-turned-part-time-sleuth Joseph Spector. Who better to make sense of the impossible than one who traffics in illusions?
Spector has a knack for explaining the inexplicable, but even he finds that there is more to this mystery than meets the eye. As he and the Inspector interview the colorful cast of suspects among the psychiatrist’s patients and household, they uncover no shortage of dark secrets—or motives for murder. When the investigation dovetails into that of an apparently impossible theft, the detectives consider the possibility that the two transgressions are related. And when a second murder occurs, this time in an impenetrable elevator, they realize that the crime wave will become even deadlier unless they can catch the culprit soon.

My Thoughts

Do you like solving puzzles and mysteries? This is a book that will keep you guessing who dunnit from the first moment; can a man be killed in a closed room or was it a ghost? Questions, questions but you’ll have to read the book to know all the answers! This is a mystery book, based in 1930 London; where a psychiatrist is found dead in his own house. He was treating 3 patients; A, B and C; we don’t know the names but we’ll know their cases and believe me when I say that all of them are quite special.
I started reading this book quite intrigued, a policeman that asks for help to a magician is quite an original story, don’t you think?
I have to say that I didn’t like much the characters or the investigators; the truth is that no one seems quite clear on their actions or purposes. Maybe I have a twisted mind and this was the intention of the author from the first moment!
It was easy to enter the story and decide that everyone could have a motive, even the daughter! But it will be in the hands of our detective/sleuth to discover the truth behind all the lies and secrets and discover how Anselm Rees has been killed.
This is a quick read, once you start you can’t stop wanting to know more about the case and how it really happened. Also, I hope this will not be the only case with George Flint and Joseph Spector, they are quite a perfect pair! Are you ready to discover “Death and the Conjuror”?
