The Great Silence by Doug Johnstone
About The Book
Keeping on top of the family funeral directors’ and private-investigation businesses is no easy task for the Skelf women, and when matriarch Dorothy discovers a human foot while walking the dog, a perplexing case presents itself.
Daughter Jenny and grand-daughter Hannah have their hands full too: the mysterious circumstances of a dying woman have led them into an unexpected family drama, Hannah’s new astrophysicist colleague claims he’s receiving messages from outer space, and the Skelfs’ teenaged lodger has a devastating experience.
Nothing is clear as the women are immersed ever deeper in their most challenging cases yet. But when the daughter of Jenny’s violent and fugitive ex-husband goes missing without trace and a wild animal is spotted roaming Edinburgh’s parks, real danger presents itself, and all three Skelfs are in peril.
This is a must read series, if you haven’t read the previously books, start now, I am not saying because you can’t follow the story of this book without reading the previous but because they are really good, believe me!
The Skelf’s are not a traditional family, they are exceptional like their businesses, a funeral home and a PI Business. Yes, they are three women involved; Dorothy, Jenny and Hannah, each one of them has an important part in the story and their own special case!
I really don’t understand how they still don’t have their own series, the cases are always interesting but with a human touch, not something totally fiction but something that could happen to any of us; and what makes them special is that they always have some part involved in the case.
This one is quite special too, because we’ll have body parts appearing, aliens and of course all the Skelfs involved in the story! I really don’t want to talk much about the plot, not for revealing too much but to make you interested in the story.
This is a book to enjoy the mystery, with detailed characters and strong women that make any reader love them; they feel real, someone you’ll want to meet and be a friend of. Also, don’t expect them to be perfect or to have always the answer, as I said they are human and they can be wrong, you have to trust them that they’ll get it right when the time is right.
Are you ready for the next adventure of the Skelfs, “The Great Silence”?
